Varenna is an attractive small town with historic sites, beautiful promenade leading to the old center of Varenna, with restaurants, wine bars and boutiques.
Varenna with its romantic harbour is located across from Menaggio. Pitched on the hillside with small winding alleys up to the old town center. From the ferry terminal is a paved footpath just above the water along the shore leading to the small square of the old fishing port. A wonderful idyllic place to enjoy refreshments in the small street cafes.There are also some excellent local and international restaurants. Varenna is easy to reach to by ferry or motor boat with places to moor.
Worth seeing in the town and its surroundings:
The castle tower of Vezio offers wonderful views and was last place of residence of the Lombard Queen Theodolinda, the castle can be reached from the village on foot in about 40 minutes. Here you will have the opportunity not only to visit the castle but also the falconry with falcon training sessions to watch and take pictures of during the daily shows.
Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi The two villas can be found directly on the lakeshore surrounded by magnificent gardens.The Villa Monastero, a former monastery, is known for its international scientific congresses and is now home to the international physics center. The magnificent baroque halls, furnature and remarkable tapestries stem from the time of Louis XIV.
The adjacent Villa, Villa Cipressi is now a venue for exhibitions and cultural presentations. It is surrounded by a large terraced landscaped botanical park.
Both gardens are open to the public .Entrance about 4 Euro per person. Open May to September from 10.00 to 12.30 and 14.00 to 18.00. In October until 17.00.
Hikers are drawn to the Esino Valley: from Varenna a spectacular mountain road leads to the 900 m high Esino Lario (11 km), from here you can walk the mountain paths and reach the high alpine North Summit of Grigna (2409 m) with its mountain hut, the walk takes about 4 - 5 hours and offers a unforgettable view over the whole of the Lombardy Alps, and on a clear day, even over the Po Valley to the Apennines.
