Bellano is a small town with ca.3238 inhabitants (as of 2012) in the Province of Lecco in the Lombardy region. The town is located on the eastern shore of Lake Como at the northern end of the Valsassina where the Pioverna river forms a natural gorge just before entering the lake. Bellano borders the municipalities of Dervio, Parlasco, Perledo, San Siro and Vendrogno.
Famous in Bellano is the deep natural gorge L'Orrido, created by the water of the torrent Pioverna between Taceno in Valsassina and Bellano. Bellano experienced dramatic times throughout history:because the armies, trying to reach the Po Valley via the Valtellina through the valley Valsassina passed to the north of Bellano to the south of Lecco.
