Stresa

Stresa is a spa town with 4758 inhabitants (as of 2012) in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola on the western shore of Lake Maggiore (Piedmont) on the Simplon railway line Domodossola - Milan. Stresa is located 200 meters above sea level and covers an area of 33 km². The districts of Stresa Brisino, Isola Bella (see also Borromean Islands), Isola dei Pescatori (see also Borromean Islands), La Sacca, Levo, Lido and Mottarone. All the Borromean Islands except Isolino di San Giovanni belong to the municipality of Stresa.

The neighboring communities are Baveno, Belgirate, Brovello-Carpugnino, Gignese, Gravellona Toce, Laveno-Mombello (VA), Leggiuno (VA), Lesa (NO), Omegna and Verbania. Nearby Stresa lies the 1,491 m high mountain Mottarone.

Tourism
In the Mid-19th century Stresa was connected to the ship traffic on the Lake Maggiore, whereas in Stendhal's times you still had to embark in Sesto Calende or in Arona in order to reach the Borromean Islands.

Today in Stresa you will find the offer of Bed & Breakfasts to luxury hotel accommodation and a wide range of shops, restaurants and cafes. 1906 after the completion of the Simplon rail tunnel, the first trains stopped that connected Paris with Milan. In the immediate vicinity of Stresa is the Villa Pallavicino, which was built in the 2nd half of the 19th century by the noble family Pallavicino in the classical style. It is located in a 16-hectare picturesque park with a small zoo.
